Why Kyōyo Haus

Tezukuri

手作り

Made by Hand

The mochi is wrapped fresh in our kitchen every morning. Nothing is shipped in. You can feel it in the skin, which stays thin and soft instead of going stiff in the freezer.

Hatsuzumi

初摘み

First Harvest

The matcha in our lattes is organic and ceremonial grade, from the first picking of the season in Kagoshima Prefecture. First-harvest leaves are younger and sweeter - the flavor is noticeably different.

Yutori

ゆとり

Room to Breathe

The space is quiet on purpose. Inside The Garage Mall on JFK Street, a short walk from Harvard Yard. Come in, take your time. Nobody will hurry you out of a seat.

Provenance

Made by hand here.
Sourced with intent from Japan.

In our lattes · Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan

Matcha

Organic · Ceremonial grade · First harvest

First-harvest leaves carry a sweetness that later picks lose. The matcha in our lattes is ceremonial grade, the same quality served at tea ceremonies.

Made here, daily

Mochi

Handmade · Fresh · Never frozen

Mochi dough is made from glutinous rice flour with milk worked in, stretched and shaped by hand each morning. The texture changes within hours of being made.

Shikoku, Japan

Yuzu

Cold-pressed · Aromatic · Tart

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus, somewhere between a lemon and a grapefruit, with a floral edge neither one has. Most of what it carries is aroma.

Kuro nerigoma, Japanese sesame paste

Black Sesame

Roasted · Ground smooth · Deep

The base is kuro nerigoma: black sesame seeds roasted deep, then ground until glossy. It carries a bitterness that balances sweetness without overpowering it.

Good to Know

Questions, answered.

What is mochi ice cream?

Mochi ice cream is a Japanese dessert: a ball of ice cream wrapped in a thin layer of mochi, a soft and chewy rice dough. At Kyōyo Haus the mochi is made by hand every morning and wrapped around the ice cream the same day, so the exterior stays thin, soft, and fresh instead of firm like frozen store-bought mochi ice cream.

Where is Kyōyo Haus located?

Kyōyo Haus is located at 36 JFK Street, Inside The Garage Mall, First Floor, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA 02138.

What are the hours at Kyōyo Haus?

Monday through Thursday 1:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Friday and Saturday 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Sunday 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

What Japanese desserts does Kyōyo Haus serve?

Kyōyo Haus serves mochi ice cream, matcha soft serve, ichigo daifuku, and Japanese lattes including matcha, hojicha, black sesame, pandan, and ube, plus cream-capped drinks like the Coco Matcha Cloud and the Shio Cold Brew. Seasonal yuzu refreshers and a rotating monthly flavor round it out.

What is the current seasonal flavor at Kyōyo Haus?

The current featured flavor is Banana Milk ($7.50), available as mochi ice cream and soft serve. Three flavors never change (matcha, black sesame, and mango); the other three slots rotate, with a new flavor arriving about once a month. A previous drop, Peach Oolong, is still on the menu in one of the rotating slots.

Can I order Kyōyo Haus online for pickup or delivery?

Yes. Order directly through Chowbus for pickup or delivery. Kyōyo Haus is also on Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Grubhub.

What mochi ice cream flavors does Kyōyo Haus have?

The lineup holds six flavors. Three never change: matcha, black sesame, and mango. The other three rotate, with a new flavor arriving about once a month; right now the rotation is lychee, peach oolong, and banana milk. Every piece is made fresh the morning it is sold.

Does Kyōyo Haus have soft serve ice cream?

Yes. Kyōyo Haus serves Japanese-style soft serve (soft cream) in the same six-flavor lineup as the mochi ice cream: matcha, black sesame, and mango always, plus three rotating flavors. Most come with an included pipette pairing, and some with toppings like coconut jelly (nata de coco) or coarse sugar.

Where can I find fresh handmade mochi near Boston?

Kyōyo Haus makes mochi ice cream fresh every morning in Harvard Square, Cambridge, a few stops from downtown Boston on the MBTA Red Line. Each piece is wrapped by hand and sold the same day it is made, never carried over.

Does Kyōyo Haus offer vegan options?

The tea lattes are the vegan side of the menu: matcha, hojicha, black sesame, lychee matcha, and hojicha matcha are vegan ordered with oat milk and without the cold foam or soft serve add-ons. Pandan and ube are not, because the condensed milk is inside the concentrate and an oat milk swap does not remove it. The capped drinks (Coco Matcha Cloud, Coco Hojicha Cloud, Sesame Hojicha Latte, and Shio Cold Brew) are not vegan or dairy-free either, even with oat milk, because the cap is cream. The yuzu ades are vegetarian rather than vegan: both bases contain honey. The mochi is not vegan either, since the dough is made with milk.

Does Kyōyo Haus use nuts or gluten?

We don't use peanuts or tree nuts in our facility. Our soft serve mix and flavour bases are made in a supplier's plant that also processes egg, wheat, peanut and tree nuts. The soft serve and the mochi contain milk and soy. Our recipes use no gluten-containing ingredients except the cream cap and cold foam, which contain barley malt, and the Banana Milk pipette, which contains a malt syrup; ask us. The cream cap is on the Coco Matcha Cloud, Coco Hojicha Cloud, Sesame Hojicha Latte, and Shio Cold Brew, and the cold foam comes as the Matcha Mochi Cold Foam and Mochi Cold Foam add-ons. The kitchen handles dairy, soy, sesame, coconut and oats.
